Yesterday I heard a friend say how nice it was just to have someone ask, “How are you feeling?” With so much going on, we have a tendency to share our thoughts and feelings or discuss what’s going on, without giving friends and family an opportunity to share how they are doing.
It’s interesting, because I asked my teenage daughter Olivia this week, “So how are you feeling about everything going on?” And it turned into one of the best conversations we have ever had.
I did the same thing with a friend who I know was really hurting with everything that is happening in the world right now. I felt weird to call them for “no reason” other than to just ask, “I was wondering how you and your family are doing?” I sensed appreciation from her that I just called to see how she was doing.
In both cases, I would have missed out on opportunities to not only make a difference in someone’s life, but an opportunity to me to grow, too, if I didn’t initiate a conversation and simply ask the question, “How are you feeling?” We all have a lot to gain when we ask that question – so why not ask someone that?
