Are you still waiting to get your Real ID? The deadline to become Real ID-compliant has been extended, giving Americans more time to gather the necessary documents.

The new deadline is May 3, 2023, after being pushed back from the original October 1 date due to COVID-19-related processing delays, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

What is a Real ID and Why Do You Need It?

A Real ID is a federally approved form of identification that will be required for domestic air travel and entry into certain federal facilities. You’ll recognize a Real ID by the star in the upper right-hand corner of your driver’s license.

Starting May 3, 2023, travelers boarding domestic flights will need to show either a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or another form of federally approved identification like a passport. Children under 18 do not need a Real ID for domestic travel when flying with an adult.

If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll still need your passport, as the Real ID requirement applies only to domestic flights.

Is a Real ID Mandatory?

No, a Real ID is not mandatory. You can renew your standard driver’s license without the Real ID designation. However, you will need to sign a form at the BMV acknowledging that you understand the limitations of a non-compliant license, including the inability to use it for domestic air travel after the deadline.

What Documents Do You Need to Get a Real ID?

To obtain a Real ID, you must apply in person at a BMV branch and provide original versions of the following documents:

  • One document proving identity: U.S. passport, birth certificate, or other approved document
  • One document proving lawful status: U.S. passport or birth certificate
  • One document proving Social Security number: Social Security card, W-2 form, or pay stub with your name and SSN
  • Two documents proving Indiana residency: Bank statement, utility bill, voter registration card, or rental agreement

If your name, date of birth, or gender has changed, you’ll also need to provide legal documentation such as a marriage license or court order.

Plan Ahead for Your Real ID Appointment

BMV branches may have varying wait times, so it’s best to schedule your appointment in advance and double-check that you have all the necessary documents before heading in.
