The IPL Downtown Freedom Fest has become a 4th of July tradition for Hoosiers in central Indiana, and this year as the fireworks light up the downtown sky, it will make a very big milestone for the city of Indianapolis.

2019 will be the 50th year that fireworks are launched from high atop the Regions Tower. This tradition began in 1970 when John Walsh, a SVP at Indiana National Bank, conceived and executed the first July 4th fireworks from the roof of what was then the 37-story Indiana National Bank Tower in downtown Indianapolis. The tradition has continued ever since.

Today, the IPL Downtown Freedom Fest fireworks are one of the only displays in the world that still launches from atop a skyscraper, and are also one of the largest displays in the state of Indiana – lasting for more than 20 minutes, while synchronized to a soundtrack that can be heard on B105.7, 93.1 WIBC, 97.1 HANK FM, and WISH-TV!

If you want to make sure you’ve got the best view of the 50th year of fireworks in downtown Indianapolis, look no further than the ground of the Indiana War Memorial!

IPL will once again be passing out light up wristbands to attendees, as well as giving you a chance to win access to the IPL Downtown Freedom Fest VIP Party by snapping a “shoefie” at the event. Find one of the many “shoefie” stations located on the ground of the Indiana War Memorial, snap a photo, and share it for your chance to win.

Plus you can enjoy live entertainment from the Indianapolis Colts Stage, a variety of food trucks on North Street, family fun in the Royal Pin Entertainment Kids Area, and of course a great view of the IPL Downtown Freedom Fest fireworks which will launch from Regions Tower after dark.
