10 Warning Signs of Heatstroke You Should Never Ignore
As temperatures rise during the summer months, so does the risk of heat-related illnesses. One of the most serious is heatstroke—a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical attention. Whether you’re spending the day outdoors, exercising, or even sitting in a hot car, recognizing the warning signs early can save lives.
Here are 10 signs of heatstroke you should never ignore:
1. High Body Temperature (104°F or Higher)
A dangerously high internal temperature is the number one indicator of heatstroke.
2. Hot, Red, or Dry Skin
The body may stop sweating, making the skin feel dry and unusually warm to the touch.
3. Rapid Heartbeat
Your pulse may feel strong and fast as your body struggles to cool itself down.
4. Confusion or Disorientation
People with heatstroke often appear confused, have slurred speech, or seem dazed.
5. Throbbing Headache
A sudden and severe headache can signal your body is overheating.
6. Nausea or Vomiting
Digestive upset, including feeling sick to your stomach or throwing up, is common.
7. Dizziness or Lightheadedness
You may feel faint, especially when standing, due to overheating and dehydration.
8. Seizures
In severe cases, heatstroke can cause seizures due to rising brain temperature.
9. Loss of Consciousness
Passing out is a medical emergency and a sure sign the body is overwhelmed by heat.
10. Lack of Sweating (Especially During Activity)
If you’re exerting yourself but not sweating, your body’s cooling system may be failing.
If you or someone around you shows signs of heatstroke, call 911 immediately.
Move to a cooler place, use cold cloths, and do not give fluids if the person is unconscious. Stay safe this summer by knowing the signs—and acting fast.
