If you were jolted awake by a loud boom or caught a bright flash lighting up the sky early Tuesday morning, you’re far from alone. The phenomenon had central Indiana buzzing with curiosity—and we’ve got the details!

At around 4 a.m. on Dec. 10, reports and jaw-dropping videos began pouring in from across the region. What was it? A thunderstorm? An explosion? Turns out, it’s something much cooler: a meteor from the Geminid meteor shower!

This dazzling celestial event is one of the brightest meteor showers of the year and is expected to peak this Friday. If the skies are clear, you might witness up to 120 meteors streaking across the heavens every hour. That’s roughly one meteor every minute—pure magic!
