Legendary musician Elton John, 77, recently shared the heartbreaking news that he has lost his eyesight following a severe eye infection. The revelation comes months after the artist first spoke about his struggles with vision issues.
Speaking candidly at a gala performance of his musical The Devil Wears Prada in London, John explained why he was unable to watch the show. “I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight,” he said. “So, it’s hard for me to see it. But I love to hear it, and, boy, it sounded good tonight.” Elton composed the score for the production and was still deeply involved despite his condition.

The star also elaborated on his health challenges during an interview on Good Morning America last week. “I unfortunately lost my eyesight in my right eye in July because I had an infection in the South of France,” he revealed. “It’s been four months now since I haven’t been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest.” Despite this, John remains optimistic about recovery, saying, “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be okay, but… I’m kind of stuck at the moment. I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric, for a start.”
The music icon first informed fans about his condition in a heartfelt Instagram post in September. “I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye,” he wrote. While describing the healing process as “extremely slow,” John expressed positivity about his progress, adding, “It will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”
Elton’s health update comes amid his ongoing transition into a quieter lifestyle after decades of touring. Despite his challenges, Elton emphasized the joys of spending more time with his husband, David Furnish, and their two sons. “We’re doing lots of creative things — musicals and stuff like that. I still have my finger on the pulse, running around. We’re spending more time with our kids,” he shared.
