James Van Der Beek revealed he has colorectal cancer.

The ‘Dawson’s Creek’ actor shared this news with PEOPLE saying, “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family.”

He added, “There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good.”

Van Der Beek has continued to work on several projects during his cancer fight.

The 47-year-old actor did not provide any other details about his diagnosis.

According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer starts in the colon or the rectum. Symptoms include blood in the stool, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, bloated stomach, unexplained weight loss, vomiting and fatigue.
