This thing that some people do with their friends may be harming their relationship – venting.  A study finds the more negative talk you have about your relationship to those outside the relationship… the more likely you are to separate.  Venting is not solution oriented, it’s drama oriented. 

Instead, focus your energy on sharing the negative aspects of your relationship with those who can help you do something about it.  That includes your partner or your therapist.  A good filter to know if so called “venting” is harmful or not: would you say it about your significant other if they were standing right there to hear it?  If so, you might be ok.  If not, probably best not to share with your friends.
