Ameila Webb was diagnosed with Ebstein’s anomaly, a rare congenital heart defect, and pulmonary atresia, a condition blocking blood flow to her longs. She underwent surgery at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health. Ameila was only 11 days old.

The next day, her oxygen levels dropped so dramatically, that Ameila was placed on a heart and lung bypass machine. Weeks went by and Ameila began to grow stronger, but just before the doctors were prepared to release her from the NICU, she suddenly turned blue. Amelia’s new shunt had malfunctioned, blocking all blood flow through her heart. The doctors quickly intubated her, saving Amelia’s life.

Scared and unsure of what each day could bring, Ameila’s parents, Jason and Leslie Webb, sought comfort at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana knowing that they could stay by Amelia’s side every step of the way.

For almost two months, the Ronald McDonald House became their “home-away-from-home” with hot showers, home-cooked meals, comfortable beds and the support of volunteers, staff and other Ronald McDonald families to help keep them strong.

“I can’t even say how much we appreciate being able to be here,” Leslie said. “It brought a sense of normalcy in the madness…there’s always someone to talk to or warm coffee. That is sometimes just what you need…the Ronald McDonald House kept us together.”

To many families, writing wishlists is a fun holiday tradition. But for families with a sick child, holiday wishes take on a whole new meaning. For just $25, you can give the best gifts of all this holiday season — home, comfort, and a break from the stress of the hospital.

This holiday season, please consider giving to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana where families come to Indianapolis in search of hope, a treatment, a cure, and sometimes a miracle while a child they love receives treatment at Riley Hospital for Children and other Indianapolis-area hospitals. Your support helps keep families together when they need each other the most.
