A reverse psychology trick that can bring you closer together.  That’s this week’s Tune Up Tuesday – a little nugget you can use to tune up your relationship!  I share one every Tuesday morning around 8:20 on B105.7.

As counterintuitive as it may sound, asking for a favor can actually give you some favor with your significant other.  It’s called the Ben Franklin effect.  There’s a famous story where Ben Franklin asked a political opponent to lend him a hard to find book.  That act ultimately brought them closer together.

The best way this can work in your relationship is to ask a favor that acknowledges the other person’s strengths and shows you value them.  Maybe your sweetie is good with words, ask them to look over an email before you send it.  Maybe they’re great in the kitchen, offer up some praise and ask them to make one of the dishes they do best!

Make sure you apply this favor asking intentionally, again in a way that spotlights your partner’s strengths and lets them feel needed, known, and appreciated.  That is to say… asking them to take out the garbage or for help finding the remote may not cut it
