With the 4th of July just around the corner, many of us are going to be having barbecues, playing yard games, and of course – watching the fireworks at IPL’s Downtown Freedom Fest!

So are you excited to celebrate Independence Day but still dreading the summer heat? We’ve got some tips and tricks up our flag pole on how to stay cool on the 4th of July.

STAY HYDRATED

This is one of the best methods to keep cool and ward off heat exhaustation. And although chugging a lot of water is one way to stay hydrated, it may be more enjoyable – and less bathroom breaks – by taking slow slips every 20 minutes or so. And lucky for you, we have just the thing to make this trick even easier – Anthem’s Hydration Station at #FreedomFestIndy! Anthem will be distributing reusable water bottles to the first 400 people who visit the station on July 4th, but anyone is welcome to fll up their water bottles at the station during the event for FREE!

USE PORTABLE FANS

We may not be able to predict the weather this far in advanced, but let’s be honest: it’s summer, it’s gonna be hot. And since many of us like to enjoy the holiday outside with friends and family, you’re going to want to stay cool. A battery-operated, portable fan will help with just that. Plus, if you want to get a little fancy, there are some fans with water misters on them as well.

DRESS FOR THE HEAT

Clearly no one plans on wearing crazy layers during the summer, but still be mindful when picking out your ‘Merica outfit for July 4th. You don’t want to be running around the War Memorial sweating and overheating. A light t-shirt or tank top with shorts or a skirt would be ideal. And remember, it’s always easier to add layers than take them off. So if you’re worried you might get a little chilly when it starts to get dark out, bring a sweatshirt!

GRILL OUTSIDE

If you plan on having a little get-together before heading to the best firework show in the city – even though we do have some delicious food truck options avaiable (just sayin’) – try to prepare as much of the food as possible outdoors. This will save you from the stove and oven heating up your kitchen. Just because you want your food to be hot doesn’t mean you or your guests want to be. Plus, nature is pretty cool to look at.
