You may need to put your spouse in time out.  That’s this week’s Tune Up Tuesday – a little nugget you can use to tune up your relationship every Tuesday morning around 8:20 on B105.7.

Now, you don’t actually need to put each other in time out, but a mutually agreed upon time out can be helpful.  Let’s say it’s late in the evening, you both are tired… and your discussion quickly turns to an argument.  That would be a great time to call a timeout.  “Honey, I’m wiped.  Can we call a timeout on this until tomorrow?”

Other examples of when it’s good to call a timeout – if you realize you need professional help to get a resolution.  Personally, I think you should seek outside help before problems arise.  Same reason you don’t wait until your engine blows up to get the oil changed.  Another example for when a timeout works is when the argument gets too heated or when criticisms start to get personal.

If you call a timeout, be clear about when you’ll come back together and try again.  Maybe it’s 15 minutes, maybe it’s a day.  The important thing is to address the issue at hand after you’ve had some time to cool off and maybe get some rest.
