The Secret to a Stronger Relationship: Life Outside the Couple Bubble
Psychologists say couples with really great relationships have a life outside of the relationship. It can be tempting to just get cozy and stay home with your sweetie all the time, but people who are good at relationships hang out with other people too. There’s even research that shows that having a shared social network strengthens a couple’s commitment to one another. So, make it a priority to get off the couch and go have drinks or dinner with friends.
Sure, weekends where it’s only the two of you are important too, but those need to be balanced with investing in mutual friends and a shared social network. In fact, most experts say that after basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter – what we most need is social connection and belonging…and it can be powerful and connecting to build and maintain that with your partner.
Last weekend we did a date night just the two of us, so this weekend we’re doing a group date on Friday night with several couples. A balanced approach—nurturing both your relationship and your friendships—can be a powerful tool for long-term happiness in love.
