What are urban tribes? Is this a new way of describing inner city gangs? No. According to Ethan Watters, a writer from San Francisco, urban tribes are, “a group of ‘never marrieds’ between the ages of 25 and 39, single, and college-educated city dwellers”. Ethan says the word ‘tribe’ is to signify “a tight group, with unspoken roles and hierarchies, whose members think of each other as ‘us’ and the rest of the world as ‘them’.” He is currently working on an entire book on this whole new societal phenomenon.
